The movie begins with the introduction of multinational conglomerate Omnicorp as a company that develops robot technology for military purpose. However, their technology have only been used overseas but not in America. Then, there is a query that rises if the same robot technology can be applied in America and Omnicorp sees this as a golden opportunity to double up their profits. When Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), a good corp as weel as loving husband and father is critically injured in the line of duty, Omnicorp comes up with the idea of building up a part-man, part-robot police officer. Since then, the conflicts in the movie begin to be portrayed as Alex Murphy starts to face many human issues a regular and normal officers has never had to face.
